Projection of the proposed A19 route with indication of the most important sites that would be endangered by this plan.

In summary, the proposed route of the A19 extension crosses the frontlines of the three major battles around Ypres and threatens to cut through many military structures. This area was the fighting ground for Belgian, Indian, British, Moroccan, German, French and soldiers of other nationalities, hence its international importance. According to the calculations of Prof. Chasseaud the Ypres soil still contains around 200,000 human remains. Indeed, many casualties remained in No-Mans Land. When possible the deceased were buried in temporary graveyards near the front (Some of these graveyards have already been destroyed during the First World War). The research plan for the present project, however, encompasses far more than just battlefield search and recovery.
