Improvised copies of grenades.
In the course of the excavations of the A19 project, special finds were made on two different locations. They were improvised grenades, fabricated out of recycled 18 pound shells. Three of these special explosive devices were recovered.
The fired shells were normally recovered to be reused in new 18 pound projectiles, were now filled with black powder. To prevent the filling getting lose, the shells were ceiled with a wooden plug. Further more, the plug was fastened by the rim of the shells which was folded inwards. At the base of the shell, were normally the firing pin is fixed, a copper thread was attached, going into the explosive charge.
