Archaeological research in Tielt

In 2006 the local authoroties in Tielt (West-Flanders) plan elaborate construction work (sewerage, …) in the town centre. Therefore the council decided to conduct a archaeological evaluation of the area (duration: 4 months). On the terrain of the planned infrastructural work 4 excavation trenches were dug. The results of this archaeological campaign can still be reviewed on the website of the city of Tielt: (dutch). The most spectacular finds were indisputably made in the last excavation trench, located just at the rear of the modern day belfry. Just 40 cm under the modern day street level, we’ve discovered the ceiling plate of a World War II shelter.
